As an artist with a US passport and the relatively advanced age of 65, I recently was a resident in Austria and was up against some seriously harsh laws dealing with the obligation for me to make a minimum income before I would be entitled to receive a longer-term Austrian visa. I also had to demonstrate proficiency in the German language…I was attempting to improve my situation but meanwhile became aware that the state was locked into sponsoring only young Austrian-born artists. I also became seriously ill and had to give up my studio and wound up returning to the USA, whose status as a foreigner-friendly country is these days much worse compared to either Germany or Austria, in my opinion.</p>
