<p>The plea in support of smallholder oil palm growers is appropriate in view of the fact that worldwide they produce 50% of the palm oil of trade. They would be most seriously hit by a ban on palm oil which some people are calling for. <br class="autobr" /> In a paper which is due to appear shortly in 'Outlook on Agriculture' I have reviewed the challenges to make the crop more 'respectable' in the eyes of the world, by using land which is degraded by previous injudicious exploitation.
